On September 12th 2015, the Department for International Development (DFID) hosted the first Youth Summit at their offices in Whitehall, central London. RTS provided event production and technical support for this summit.

The Youth Summit allowed young people from all over the UK to have their voices heard on global issues. The results of the day’s conference were then taken by Secretary of State, Justine Greening, to the UN conference held in New York.

Last year’s GIRL Summit focused on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and Child and Forced Marriage. DFID’s commitment at the Girl Summit led to this year’s Youth Summit which continued the important work of keeping these issues in the spotlight.

Event management services for last year’s mammoth GIRL Summit which took place over 28 rooms at the Walworth Academy was in the capable hands of RTS and so again “we” were the natural choice for this year’s event.

60 inch comfort monitors and audience relay screens, a D&B Audiotechnik PA system were all suspended from trussing above the audience. The only two items on the floor were the stage itself and the set which was comprised of a 4.5m x 2.5m Absen A3 Pro 3.9mm pixel pitch LED video wall, supplied by PSCo – built on a scaffold platform and included various set panels and surrounds.

This allowed maximum seating capacity for summit delegates. To make the Q‘n’A sessions more informal, RTS supplied several Catch Boxes, containing a radio microphone allowing the audience to throw the microphone to one another.

The Youth Summit was launched by Secretary of State for International Development, Justine Greening. The main stage hosted inspirational speakers such as Fahma Mohamed an anti-FGM activist, a personal video message from Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United Nations and Malala Yousafzai.

The Youth Summit included interactive workshops throughout the day that focused on global goals that need to be tackled, some of which included:

  • The fight to end poverty – helping young people to gain skills and confidence  and to have one-on-one conversations with those who make important decisions.
  • The meaning of global goals for young people – hosted by Rick Edwards, focused on climate change, education, employment and gender equality.
  • Local action for global change – hosted by the Wonder Foundation, those that attended this session were provided with the skill set to make an impact in their local area.

RTS created a “Marketplace” for delegates to interact with the 25 organisations and charities were represented at the Youth Summit. A live video feed of the main conference was streamed straight into the Marketplace which meant delegates didn’t miss a thing!

Organisations that took part in the Youth Summit were:

WePROTECT
In December 2014, representatives from more than 50 countries gathered in London for the #WePROTECT Children Online summit, the purpose of this conference was to work towards stamping out online child sexual abuse.

The impact of child abuse, both in its physical and online forms continues to be one of the most reprehensible problems of society. With the rise of the internet age, physical forms of abuse and exploitation have migrated online, and countless images are embedded and available for viewing on the internet.

Delegates gathered with the aim of coordinating a “global response”, which could specifically tackle this proliferation of child sexual abuse material in circulation today.

RTS provided the following technical services for this high profile two day event:

  • Full audio and visual production including branded backdrop, staging, branded stage furniture, radio microphones, presentation and video playback.
  • Translation of multiple languages offered to over 250 delegates
  • AV distribution and live relay of main auditorium to translations booths
  • AV distribution and live relay of conference to over-spill rooms around the venue
  • Live broadcast feeds to international broadcasters

Centre for Cities
On 6th November 2014, Centre for Cities and the Office of the Deputy Prime Minster co-hosted the Northern Futures Summit in Leeds. RTS were approached to provide the audiovisual production elements for this event.

The nature of the summit was to bring together UK city leaders, academics, senior policy experts, captains of industry, local students and teachers, who shared their ideas on how governments, business and citizens could work together to create a thriving northern economy.

The main talking points at the Northern Futures Summit were on how to deliver the right infrastructure, how to build better environments to live, work and do business, and practical ways to boost northern prosperity in the years ahead.

The brief given to RTS at the start of this project was to keep within a strict tight budget and provide innovative ways in which to engage the audience members in the pitches and keynote speeches.

RTS provided the following audiovisual services for the conference:

  • Full audio and visual production in the main auditorium including stage furniture, comfort monitors, speech timers, radio microphones, presentation / video playback
  • Audio and Video distribution and live relay of main auditorium to screens around the venue and public areas
  • Live show direction incorporating 2 manned HD-SDI cameras, 1 locked-off static HD-SDI camera, video playback and speakers’ presentations
  • Event wide production staff and radio communications
  • Electronic voting system for 300 attendees with multiply choice Q&A displaying results in the main auditorium and on the web stream
  • Utilising existing in-house equipment to keep within budget

A Centre For Cities spokesperson said after the event, “We were running a full day event in Leeds, and it was the first time I had done anything of that scale. RTS were incredibly helpful in ensuring the day was as smooth as possible – from the exact location where people would be mic’ed up, to working very late the night before doing a dry run of the following day’s event. They were very accommodating given our tight budget, and ensured the essentials were there at a price we could afford, and the service and communication was consistent and professional.”

RTS were approached by staff at Southwark Coroner’s office to provide, install and operate all audio visual and video conferencing solutions for the Jean Charles de Menezes inquest. Including all special measures (witness anonymity) for statements via video conferencing link.

RTS were responsible for the design, installation and maintenance of the audiovisual and  information technology video and data infrastructure within the purpose built temporary court room and the integration onto the local networking infrastructure at the Surrey Oval in central London.

Installation and operation of a simultaneous interpretation infra-red system allowing the de Menezes family to hear the proceedings in their native language.

PTZ ceiling mounted cameras were installed into the courtroom allowing live video and audio to be streamed to the media overspill annexe located separately on the far side of the Surrey Oval over an IPTV video link.

Facial pixelation and blocking techniques were integrated into the video system, masking the identity of the witnesses from the public and press areas.

The inquest lasted approximately 14 weeks.

On completion of the Inquest, the Coroner’s staff said: “RTS Communications provided a professional service from start to finish, offering pro-active solutions to issues which were outside their original remit. Staff were always on hand and without their support, sometimes providing items at really short notice, the inquest would not have progressed as smoothly as it did.”
