Case Study: Lord’s Cricket Ground IPTV

Lord’s Ground, located in north west London, is recognised worldwide as the “Home of Cricket”. Owned by Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), Lord’s is also home to Middlesex County Cricket Club, the England and Wales Cricket Board and the European Cricket Council, as well as one of the world’s oldest sporting museums.

The Challenge

In 2013, MCC unveiled a masterplan to redevelop Lord’s to maintain its position as the most prestigious ground in the world at which to watch and play cricket. As part of the phased development, the existing Warner Stand was demolished at the end of the 2015 season and a new £25 million state-of-the-art stand was opened by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh in May 2017.

With a capacity of 2,656, the striking new stand has been designed to deliver an enhanced spectator experience for MCC Members and their guests, and includes a significant upgrade to catering and entertainment facilities which will be in use throughout the year.

The Solution

As part of the upgrade, Lord’s selected a complete, end-to-end Exterity IP video and digital signage solution to deliver high-quality live TV and digital signage throughout the Warner Stand, including bar and catering areas and match control facility. The solution was deployed by leading systems integrator RTS, working closely with the Technology Department at Lord’s.

Stuart Moore, Managing Director at RTS, said: “The customer wanted to ensure they were HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) compliant and Exterity represented the obvious choice with its integrated, end-to-end HDCP solutions. Flexible and scalable, the Exterity IPTV system can also easily be expanded to the other stands as the ground redevelopment progresses. The team at Lord’s pre-configured the network for IPTV in advance of installation so everything was very straightforward.”

“One of the main reasons we chose Exterity was that we could get the entire solution from a single vendor. Exterity products are plug-and-play, easy to install, incredibly robust and centrally managed through a single panel of glass. I have also been very impressed by the level of service and support I have received from both RTS and Exterity and look forward to a ground-wide IPTV expansion in the future.”

Mike MacDonald, Technical Operations Manager at MCC

The Result

Exterity AvediaStream HDCP Encoders securely deliver content-protected live Sky and BT Sports channels – which, of course, include live cricket matches – to screens around the Warner Stand, J.P. Morgan Media Centre and new scorers’ box, ensuring viewers never miss a second of the action.

Lord’s also records non-televised county cricket matches: live camera feeds are fed into an existing RF system which are in turn captured by an Exterity AvediaStream TVgateway and streamed as channels over the IP network. The single TVgateway blade also delivers all UK Freeview channels.

Exterity ArtioSign digital signage solution – which is integrated into every Exterity AvediaServer and AvediaPlayer Media Player – is used in the bar, catering areas and the lobby to display drink menus and pricing, sponsor adverts and to promote Lord’s Shop and cricket store merchandise on match days. ArtioSign is also used to create personalised, branded signage screens for meetings and conferences held on non-match days.

“We are delighted that our IP video and digital signage solution is helping to create an immersive fan experience at a world-class sporting institution such as Lord’s. Being equipped with the latest content protection solutions also ensures that they can meet the content industry’s stringent security requirements, something that will only increase in importance as the quality of video continues to improve.”

Sound Masking Logo

Sound Masking is the addition of an unobtrusive background sound, similar to airflow, to reduce the intelligibility of human speech and to reduce distractions. The resulting environment leads to greater productivity and increased privacy and comfort.

Corporate offices feature a variety of workspaces that require their own unique solutions for improving worker comfort, productivity, and speech privacy. Modern open offices contain far more reflective materials, such as glass and wood, than ever before. Then, combine those factors with more benching and less private offices. While these changes have made workplaces more aesthetically pleasing and collaborative, it has also affected the acoustics.Sound Masking in corporate settings, such as the ones described above, help improve the acoustic environment. This enables employees to feel more comfortable and less distracted at work.

RTS was approached to design and install a multi zone sound masking solution as part of an office refurbishment in central London. The space was a combination of open planned office spaces, communal hallways and private meeting rooms.

RTS installed a Cambridge Sound Management QT300 control module, capable of multi zone installations up to 36,000 square feet. The QT300 was connected to 122 individual sound masking emitters across 3 independent zones. This system is capable of covering up to 3 diverse areas in buildings needing improved speech privacy. Configuration of the system was through the QT300 web browser interface or the front panel which can be locked out to avoid unauthorised tampering.

QT300 Controller Module

Qt emitters are wide dispersion direct field speakers with 1.25” (3.17 cm) drivers and are smaller than a coffee mug. All Qt emitters come in the adjustable format. These emitters deliver four uncorrelated audio channels, which provide uniform, unobtrusive sound masking. This feature, along with plug and play installation and easy configuration capability, make Qt® systems the most intelligently engineered and most effective sound masking systems on the market today.

RTS installation engineers worked alongside various tradespeople to ensure that the sound masking installation was delivered on schedule and to budget.

Talk to RTS about a tailored digital signage solution

RTS have recently installed a videowall for a public sector client in central London using the EYEVIS product range of videowall controllers and processors over HDBaseT

RTS were engaged by an existing public sector client to assist with the design and installation of a new videowall as part of an existing building upgrade to modernise a control room within the customer building.

Video Wall Example

RTS distributed multiple HD CCTV images, IPTV and local video using a dedicated EYEVIS Netpix videowall Processor. The EYEVIS Netpix allows for exceptional customisation of video display arrangements when using the custom API in conjunction with an AMX Control processor. Video from the EYEVIS Netpix was distributed to a 3×2, ultra-narrow bezel display array, using Extron HDBaseT extenders.

The audio from IPTV and local sources was processed via an Extron audio DSP outputting program sound using K-ARRAY integration speakers, either side of the video wall.

RTS worked alongside other trades to complete the project within the allocated timescales and to budget. The finished result was ” a real show stopper” and the client training was minimised as the system was intuitive enough with the system integrating with a user friendly AMX touch-panel design.

Digital Signage

Digital signage brings the opportunity to deliver information and advertising in a dynamic multimedia format. It’s eye-catching, engaging and offers superior return on investment when compared to traditional printed signs.

The retail sector is by far the biggest single vertical market for digital signage. Retailers use digital signage for sales, marketing and branding purposes. Dynamic images for advertising are far more attractive than paper posters and offer greater flexibility for a given space. With digital signage, it is possible to show a broad range of different adverts on the same display while managing and monitoring content remotely. Many retailers already employ digital signage solutions on a global basis because it is quick, efficient and affordable.

Public Display

Post offices, doctor’s surgeries and hospitals are just a few public places that are often visited by a large number of people. Digital signage is an infotainment technology and customers can be informed about important facts or they can entertained whilst they wait to be served.

Corporate Communication

Digital signage is an excellent tool for communication. In the workplace, it is used to inform and educate staff on health and safety, upcoming events and messages from management. For visitors it enforces an organisation’s brand identity, entertains visitors in reception and shows the way to meeting rooms.

Public Transport

Railway and bus stations are visited by large numbers of people every day and digital signage can keep passengers updated before, during and after their journey. Instead of a single inconspicuous paper poster with just one message, digital signage can be used to show numerous messages on multiple displays. Pictures, text and videos – anything is possible to help make information clear and visible. And using a combination of indoor and outdoor displays, will help the message reach its intended audience regardless of the location.

A bank is an institution that offers a broad range of products and services. As a result, it can be a challenge to keep customers informed about the various banking products and services. Digital media is the ideal solution to show the latest information as quickly as possible.

Airports are crowded and hectic places where people constantly arrive and depart. Airport solutions are the perfect medium to provide passengers with real time travel information and guidance. Signage in airports is one of the oldest and best known applications for digital media. It shows passengers a mixture of sales promotions, video clips, movies, luggage information and flight details.

Leisure and Hospitality

Pubs, clubs, gyms and restaurants are all environments that benefit from digital signage. Through advertising campaigns and displaying the latest offers – digital signage can offer a good return on investment through increased sales and customer retention. Hotels and convention centres have also recognised the need to incorporate digital signage into their facilities. Effective digital signage can inform people on the spot and serve as a virtual concierge to keep tourists informed about their holiday resort, give directions, display schedules for activities and even advertise hotel amenities such as restaurants and spas.

Digital signage enables educational facilities to communicate with students, staff and visitors with Conference, Lecture Theatre and Exam times. In primary and secondary education, digital signage can be used to demonstrate class work or school outings. For further and higher education it becomes a tool to sell the benefits of the establishment to prospective students as well as entertaining and informing existing students with campus activities, union messages and campaigns.
